Foregone Conclusion

Once a mighty river flowed here
The water was wild and clear
There was life and energy
for as far as the eye could see

The rapids were white and roaring
Eagles flew high above, soaring
Time and ignorance has halted the flow
A fading memory remains from long ago

How does a mighty river of resource just die
Did no one notice its pain or hear its cry?
Now that it is gone, a victim of our illusions

What can we learn from the foregone conclusion
that humans matter more than the place we live

That all other life is here to assist and give
to us, and not the other way around
Are we such fools that we would kill the sacred ground
That sustains us?

Can history retrain us?

Will future generations forgive us?

Will our planet out live us?

Or do we all die
together?
