Paper and Gold

Little hearts cut out of
paper in an array
of colors bright
Opening in the
day
Folding in the
night
Hearts, as flowers
responding to the turning
of the hours
Sunshine and shadows
known
Cover quickly blown
When hearts are constructed
of paper
Easily torn and taped
back together
Integrity tough to maintain
in life's inclement
weather

When you hand me your heart
again some long off day
Know I must run and turn
away
toward the one who shared
their heart
fully and fearlessly right
from the start

For hearts made of paper
run in the
rain
Design a heart that
courts not the clouds of
pain
When you see the taped up
scars
of your paper heart
Know I wanted
to walk with you, the stars

My wish is that you do
one day
forge your heart of
gold
Do it now before time
makes you too old
Walk in the rain
Let go your epic pain
Sing your own songs, let your story
be told
Sing them from your newborn
heart of gold
